Job Description


The purpose of the CUMC Preschool is to transform the lives of our Preschool students and their families for Jesus Christ by maintaining the mission and vision of the church and serving the families by preparing students in a successful kindergarten prep program. A Preschool Team Teacher assists the Director in leading activities necessary for the implementation of a functional class environment that enhances student learning and achievement while following the Community United Methodist Church’s Mission.

Hours and Compensation: This is an hourly, part time position, with no benefits. The amount compensated is set by the Staff Parish Relations Committee. The hours of work are determined on an annual basis, based on the program needs. The school year is approximately 10 months. The daily allowance of hours agreed upon for this contract is 3 - 6 hours Monday - Friday, no more than 30 scheduled hours per week. Hours will be based on class sessions offered during the school year, 3 hours per session. Sessions will be set annually by August 1st. A Team Teacher is paid for only the days worked. Sick days, vacation days, and cancelled days are unpaid. Lunch hour is unpaid. Therefore, the assistant position is not eligible for unemployment benefits during vacations and summer break. A Team Teacher will be compensated the hourly rate for weather make up days and scheduled events, such as registration, orientation, programs, performances, parent involvement nights, trainings, and board meetings. A Team Teacher may work 3 days (6 hours per day) prior to the beginning of the year and/or 3 days (6 hours per day) after the end of the year, as approved by the Director.

Accountability: A Preschool Team Teacher reports to the Director, the CUMC Staff Parish Committee, and the Senior Pastor. A Preschool Team Teacher works in cooperation with the Director and Preschool Board, receiving from the Director and Board support and advisory direction. The mission of the Preschool is only accomplished by cooperation with these persons and other church staff and volunteers.

Job Requirements: a minimum of a High School Diploma with no less than one year of experience working with children ages 3-5 in a structured daycare or preschool setting. An Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood or a related field is preferred. A Team Teacher must pass a nationwide criminal history check, be certified in CPR, and maintain integrity, good moral character, and an excellent code of conduct. A Team Teacher must communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. A Team Teacher will be evaluated by the Staff Parish Relations Committee with input from the Preschool Director and Board. A Preschool Team Teacher is a mandatory reporter of suspected neglect or abuse cases to Director and Senior Pastor.



Maintain confidentiality at all times. The Assistant will sign a CUMC confidentiality agreement.

Provide a safe learning environment for students at all times.

Exhibit a genuine nurturing, caring, and patient attitude with the children.

Maintain a positive, calm, and cooperative attitude with everyone.

Assist the Director with classroom management and behavior modification.

Enforce rules and procedures of the classroom to foster self-discipline.

Assist with dismissal of students, one at a time, to an approved guardian.


Model a love of Jesus Christ.

Display Christian, ethical and professional behavior regarding school and church members.

Encouraging students and their families to worship God.

Promote good self-esteem.


Assist Director in supervising the children during daily lessons, activities, and events.

Facilitate both indoor and outdoor activities.

Assume teaching duties in the absence of the Director.

Maintain open communication with the Director and the Preschool Board.

Work one on one with students as directed by the Director.

Perform simple clerical tasks and demonstrate computer literacy.

Assist with prepping or creating materials for lessons and activities.

Display student work as directed by the Director.

Assist with snack time and clean up afterwards.

Assist with bathroom supervision and help students with clothing as needed.

Sanitize materials and toys weekly.

Maintain a clean, tidy, and organized classroom.

Assist Director with data collection and assessing students.

Assist Director in record keeping and with important observations regarding student development and well-being.

Administer CPR, first aid,etc. as deemed necessary and participate in fire and disaster drills.

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $8.00 to $10.00 /hour
